The Nexus 5 was a solid performer for Google
Google may drop a minor surprise by launching two size variants for its next Nexus phone, if reports are to be believed.
Phone Arena brings word that the site is planning another handset on top of the 5.9-inch Nexus 6 (often dubbed Nexus X or Nexus 5 2014), both of which will be made by Motorola.
The 5.9-inch Nexus phone is believed to be a variant of a forthcoming Moto S device and this is where it gets a little complicated, so bear with us.
The report claims Google may launch also variant of the 5.2-inch Motorola S currently being tested, and also rebrand it as a Nexus device.
This will happen if Moto decides not to launch the smaller handset under its own banner, the report claims.
Apparently it all hinges on the performance of the forthcoming Moto X 1 device, which will also ship with a 5.2-inch display, according to recent rumours.
If it does well, Moto will likely launch the 5.2-inch Moto S and Google will not. If it does poorly, Moto will launch the 5.9-inch Moto S and Google will be free to pick the bones.
Are you still with us? Congratulations.
Anyway, the overriding point is that we may end up with two Nexus phones before the year is out, in a year dominated by speculation Google was planning to discontinue the own-branded smartphones.
Also expected before 2014 is out is an 8.9-inch Nexus tablet made by HTC.
On Wednesday we brought word confirming the device will boast the new Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, which could bring desktop-quality performance to tablets.
