The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Google Nexus 4 has begun, with reports that the software is already starting to be delivered.
Following a brief delay after the software’s launch, the OTA Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Nexus 4 has reportedly begun.
To check for the update on your Nexus 4, go to the System Update option within the About Phone section of the Settings menu. This will check if the update is available online.
The Android 4.3 update is around 160MB in size, so you’ll want to download it over Wi-Fi.
Android 4.3 was launched on 24 July, alongside the new Nexus 7. However it wasn’t initially available for download on all of Google’s current Nexus devices.
Android 4.3 Improvements
New features introduced in Android 4.3 include restricted profiles, letting you create a kid-friendly zone on your Nexus 7 (the feature is not available in the Nexus 4), Bluetooth Smart and support for OpenGL 3.0.
Bluetooth Smart is primarily useful as a low-power transmission standard for accessories like fitness monitors, while OpenGL 3.0 is a graphics API that’ll allow for more advanced visuals in Android games. Previous versions of Android only supported OpenGL 2.0.
Nexus 7 Android 4.3 features
While Android 4.3 is for the most part a minor update to the existing Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software, the original Nexus 7 in particular will benefit from some pretty important fixes.
According to Anandtech, the update will introduce support for fstrim. It’s a rather involved ‘under the hood’ feature that provides much more careful management of the memory used by apps in the Nexus 7, and should reduce the amount of slow-down in Nexus 7s that have a significant number of apps and games installed.
