Samsung Galaxy Note 3 once again tipped to host flexible OLED display

Widely expected to touch down later this year as a direct replacement for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the repeatedly rumoured Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has once again been tipped to sport a flexible OLED display.

Said to be the first of its kind, latest reports have added to a recent flurry of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours, all claiming that the smartphone turn tablet hybrid will launch with a plastic, flexible OLED display in tow.

Taking a step away from the traditional glass displays that currently feature on its full array of smartphone offerings, reports have claimed that the Galaxy Note 3 will see Samsung introduce an “unbreakable” plastic option which will be “thinner and lighter than the conventional glass substrate type OLED.”

With the handset widely expected to line up with at least a 5.9-inch screen on board, it has been claimed that the move to a plastic OLED substrate will allow Samsung to cut 1mm of thickness and 50g in weight off the handset’s form factor.

According to the latest reports, “The consumer market will be able to experience the unbreakable plastic based AMOLED display integrated into the Galaxy Note 3.”

They added: “Compared to glass substrate type AMOLEDs, the flexible display features a thinner and lighter form factor, resulting in smaller size and higher mobility.”

Offering further details on the handset’s potential arrival, the OLED Association added: “Samsung Electronics Company will exhibit a new Galaxy NOTE 3, featuring an unbreakable OLED display at IFA 2013 in September and plans to launch the product in Q4’2013.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumours

Whilst we advise that these reports of a flexible display inclusion be taken with a considerable pinch of salt, the volume of reports hinting to the handset’s plastic OLED screen inclusion would leave us to believe they could be some element of validity in the claims.

Aside from a flexible display component, further Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have suggested that, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S4, the device will benefit from a new aluminium clad design, moving away from the cheap plastic construct of past models.

According to recent claimed sources: “Samsung is planning to switch build quality for the next flagship device,” with the South Korean manufacturer said to be “worried” by its lack of design appeal.

What’s more, although official word has yet to be shared, a IFA 2013 Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launch has been repeatedly mooted with the handset expected to hit retailers in the weeks that follow.
