UHD broadcasting to be tested for 2014 FIFA World Cup

As UHD TVs start to appear, LG has suggested that the first UHD broadcasts are not far behind, with next year’s 2014 FIFA World Cup to be a testing bench for the ultra-high-definition content.

With global sporting events often acting as a launch platform for new broadcast mediums and recording methods, TV platform leaders LG have revealed that UHD broadcasting will be tested during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with the football tournament expected to boost interest in the emerging technology.

“In Brazil ahead of the World Cup, UHD broadcasting will be tested,” Seok-Pan Kang, LG’s Director of TV said.

Claiming that UHD TVs, like HD and 3D units before them, are currently being held back by a lack of native content, Kang has suggested that whilst live broadcasts, such as those that will be tested during the World Cup, are still in their infancy, “on the video side its already

being provided.”

Despite Full HD content only just hitting its peak and with 3D content having yet to fully take off, Kang has hinted that UHD could well be the next big thing on the home entertainment scene, stating “I think that this is the trend the market is moving towards.”

That said, at present, the UHD TV market is extremely small with Kang stating: “Realistically, in the market at the moment there aren’t enough devices you can enjoy this with.” Showing the company’s intent for further UHD focus, however, he added: “We want to lead in this market.”

Although UHD broadcasting is set to be trialled in the run up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, it is currently unclear which broadcasters or indeed which countries are set to trial the new content offering systems.
