Having unveiled the first curved display OLED TV at CES 2013 earlier this year, LG has suggested that the first curved screen TVs will launch in the UK later this year.
With much attention currently focussing on the prospect of curved screen smartphones, a possibility further compounded by recently leaked iPhone 6 concept images, LG has suggested that curved TVs will be the next big advancement in the home entertainment sector, with the first curved OLED TVs to hit retailers ‘soon’.
“I can’t give you an exact time, but I think we will see the first curved TV devices on the market soon,” Hung W.K. Shin, Team Manager of the Home Electronics Product Communication team at LG told TrustedReviews at the company’s Seocho R&D campus in Seoul, South Korea.
“We are preparing various types of curved TV, Hung Shin said, adding: “Not only 55-inch models but larger as well. Consumers will be most strongly immersed with this curve.
Describing curved TVs as “another major trend,” Thomas Lee, LG’s Vice President of Home Entertainment offered further insight on when consumers can expect the first curved TVs. He stated that “curved TVs are coming in the second half of this year.”
Featuring a concaved design, the first curved OLED designs help provide users with stronger viewing angles and more immersive viewing experiences. Showcased at CES in January, the curved display hosting LG EA9800 features a 55-inch OLED panel with a WRGB pixel construction to offer vibrant whites and impressive contrast ratios. Playing host to a ‘Paper Slim’ design, the LG EA9800 sports a 1080p Full HD resolution.
Singing the praises of the potential of curved TVs, Kyung-Jin Kang, a lead engineer of LG’s Home Electronics range said, “When people view the curved TV they will be able to enjoy a wider angle.”
He added: “When you go to the cinema the screen is curved. By applying that to the TV you can enjoy being at the cinema in your living room.”
