Elon Musk, real-life Tony Stark and founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has just offered up $10 million to help keep us safe from would-be AI overlords.
Musk has already spoken publicly on the dangers of unconstrained advancement in the artificial intelligence sector, and now he’s putting cash down to back it up, as reported by The Verge .
The cash will be doled out to researchers who win grant competitions, applications for which are due to start Monday.
The Future of Life Institute will be managing the cash distribution, describing itself as a company that works ‘to mitigate existential risks facing humanity.’
Money can go to either academic or business researchers, as long as they have sufficiently brainy ideas to help avoid a global AI takeover.
“The plan is to award the majority of the grand funds to AI researchers, and the remainder to AI-related research involving other fields such as economics, law, ethics, and policy,” explained the FLI.

This isn’t the first time Musk has warned over AI, with the tech magnate having previously described advancement in the sector as comparable to ‘summoning the demon.’
During an interview at MIT, Musk said: “I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence.”
“If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful.”
He even called for ‘regulatory oversight’ at a ‘national and international level’ to avoid any ‘foolish’ mistakes.
