Destiny beta played by 4.6 million

Activision has revealed that the Destiny beta was played by 4.6 million gamers.

The Destiny beta ran from July 17 to July 27, with PS4 and PS3 gamers offered the longest access period.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 users gained access on July 23, with the beta opened up to anyone without a pre-order access code on Friday, July 25.

During that period, Bungie recorded over a whopping 4.6 million unique players taking part in the beta, which it is calling the largest ever for a new IP.

“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come.”

Building on the alpha released in June for PS4, the beta offered fans a selection of storyline missions, multiplayer maps and other content to sample ahead of the Destiny release date on September 9.

There were also special timed events during the beta, including an opportunity to play one of the Moon maps that will feature in the final game.

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta,” said Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie. “We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

Destiny will launch for PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, with PlayStation platforms getting some exclusive DLC as part of an Activision/Sony deal.
