Pebble Steel and Appstore launched at CES 2014

Pebble has launched the latest in its smart watch line-up, the premium Pebble Steel.

The familiar e-paper display has now been packaged into a marine-grade stainless steel design with Corning Gorilla Glass protective and anti-fingerprint covering.

Steel is also thinner and lighter than the original Pebble, which helps appeal to the premium consumers it is aimed at.

Down the side are “tactile metal buttons” and the Pebble Steel is waterproof to 5 ATM. There’s also a magnetic connector for your charger.

The Pebble Steel is still compatible with all the existing Pebble apps and software as well.

It features an LED light that indicates charging, but this will also be used for other features at developers’ discretion.

Available now, the Pebble Steel retails for $249 (£150) and is available in brushed steel or matte black. Shipping will start on January 28 and if you’re quick you’ll get free worldwide shipping.

Pebble also announced that it will be launching its very own Pebble Appstore, bringing all the various Pebble apps under one united storefront.

Apps will be organised into easily accessible categories like “daily”, “remotes”, “tools and utilities” and “games”, and of course “watch faces”.

The Appstore will also be available for Pebble developers to post their own apps from today. However, if you want your app to be ready for the Appstore launch, you have to get it uploaded by January 9.

The Appstore will launch by the end of January with a firmware upgrade, which will also bring software tweaks.
