Android looks set to get bigger and bigger

Android device shipments will exceed 1.1 billion over the course of 2014.

According to research company Gartner, shipments of Android devices will grow this year to top 1.1 billion by December.

That’s a pretty impressive number for Google’s ecosystem, which will become the biggest selling in 2014 by quite a margin.

In 2014, Android is predicted to grow by 26 per cent, up from almost 900 million unit shipments in 2013.

Microsoft Windows shipments, which include desktop and mobile devices, will be the second largest in 2014 with an estimated 360 million. This is up from 328 million in 2013.

Apple iOS and OS X shipments combined will be over 344 million in third place this year, up from 267 million last year.

All these figures are only set to rise by 2015. Gartner predicts 1.25 billion Android shipments, 422 million for Windows and 397 million for Apple.

In terms of the installed user base, Android will have 2 billion users to its name and Apple’s iOS and OS X combo will have 682 million.

Gartner also predicted that the total number of devices (tablets, hybrids, PC, and mobile phones) sold during the year will reach 2.5 billion, increasing 7.6 per cent from 2013.

This equates to the sale of nearly 1.9 million mobile phones and 263 million tablets in the course of the year.

Unfortunately the Gartner data still suggests that PC sales are declining, dropping to 278 million from 299 million in 2013.
