HTC Desire 700 mid-range 5-inch smartphone unveiled

HTC has taken the wraps off another mid-range smartphone, the 5-inch HTC Desire 700.

The new phone was launched recently in HTC’s native Taiwan, which, along with its dual-SIM nature, tells us who it's intended for. HTC is clearly targeting the lucrative Asian market with its latest batch of affordable Androids.

So how does the HTC Desire 700 match up to the recently released HTC Desire 500?

This is an altogether bigger phone, with a 5-inch display compared to the Desire 500’s 4.3-inch tiddler. It compensates for that stretched display by throwing more pixels at it - we’re talking about a 960 x 540 qHD resolution next to the 500’s standard 800 x 480 display.

The HTC Desire 700 is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, which seems to match its immediate predecessor in the range. That’s backed by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, whilst there’s also a microSD slot for memory expansion.

On the camera front, we’re looking at a familiar 8-megapixel snapper with autofocus and an LED flash.

Externally, the HTC Desire 700 looks a lot more like the HTC One than it does the Desires of old. Of course, it lacks that gorgeous aluminium unibody casing, but the familiar fascia detailing and top-and-tail stereo speakers all appear to be there.

Speaking of the HTC Desire 500, though, HTC has also launched the HTC Desire 501 for the Asian market. It sports a 4.3-inch display, like the 500, but runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU.

Will we see either of these mid-range smartphones here in the West? Not any time soon, we’d guess, and you’d have to fear for their chances against the stunningly good value Motorola Moto G if they did.

The HTC Desire 700 is priced at NTD13,900 (£288), while the Desire 501 costs NTD9,900 (£205).
