Samsung announces Milk VR app, and ‘mystery’ VR TV show

Samsung has just officially announced its virtual reality platform, Milk VR, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Milk VR is now available to download from the Oculus store on Samsung Gear VR free of charge, and will feature regular content in 360-degree video format.

Tim Baxter, Samsung’s President and COO for North America, said: “Last month, we launched an amazing mobile experience, the Samsung Gear VR.”

“So now, let me introduce you to Milk VR. This exclusive service provides a daily stream of 360-degree videos which will make Gear VR a must-have.”

Baxter continued to reveal Milk VR’s launch partners, which included Acura, Artists Den, Boiler Room, Matador, Mountain Dew, Red Bull Media House, and Refinery29.

“We’re launching with 30 new titles, and we will deliver new content daily, from music and sports, to action and lifestyle, so that there’s always something fresh for you to enjoy.”

NBA is also on board, with Baxter promising ‘a mix of game action and behind the scenes footage from marquee events all in VR.’

What’s more, David Alpert, Executive Product of Skybound Entertainment’s The Walking Dead, joined Baxter on stage and announced that a VR-friendly TV show would be coming to Gear VR.

“Virtual reality is so exciting. VR allows us to get really creative. We’re about to celebrate Skybound’s 5th anniversary, and it’s a great marker of what we are learning with Samsung to create a mystery suspense thriller entirely in VR.”

Alpert outed that show as coming ‘later this year’, revealing the series would come in short episodes, and would be available exclusively through Milk VR.

“VR gives viewers a total immersive experience, which allows us – the storytellers – to really push the boundaries and explore new ways of engaging the audience.”

He added: “It’s a new level of connection, and we can’t wait to show everyone what we can do.”

Perhaps most excitingly, Baxter asked Alpert when would we see ‘zombies coming to VR’, to which he replied: “Well we’re not ruling anything out, but you’re gonna have to stay tuned.”

The Walking Dead fans are assuredly swooning…
