The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini will launch later this month
The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini has been officially unveiled, with the compact smartphone spinoff boasting a 4.5-inch HD display.
A notable step down on its 5.1-inch flagship sibling, the Samsung Galaxy S5, the new S5 mini pairs its 720p HD Super AMOLED display with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor.
“A larger screen might not work for everyone, so the Galaxy S5 mini is great for anyone after a smartphone that they can more easily slip into their pocket or bag,” Ines Van Gennip, Samsung’s Marketing Director for UK and Ireland said in unveiling the device.
She added: “As with our previous ‘mini’ devices, this latest incarnation combines the iconic design and essential features of the Galaxy S5 with a sleek and compact body.”
Samsung Galaxy S5 mini Features
Unlike the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact which feature many of the same high-end specs as its flagship sibling albeit in a smaller form, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini’s specs sheet offers little resemblance to its high-end brethren at all.
As well as dropping screen size and clarity and a significant amount of grunt from its CPU, the S5 mini’s specs sheet sees the S5’s 16-megapixel camera thrown out in favour of a cheaper 8-megapixel offering. A secondary, 2.1-megapixel snapper will feature on the device’s fore.
Lining up at 9.1mm thick and running Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS with a TouchWiz overlay, the S5 mini adds 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage to its features list, although its capacity can be expanded to 64GB via microSD.
Set to be made available in the same four colour schemes as the full S5 – Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold – the IP67 dust and water resistant S5 mini will be powered by a 2100mAh Lithium-Ion battery.
Samsung Galaxy S5 mini Release Date and Price
Although Samsung has yet to detail pricing, the Korean manufacturer has confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini release date will be held later this month.
The phone will roll out in Russia first, with further markets – including the UK – to follow at a later date.
