The iPad mini 3 could be called the iPad Air mini when it is launched later this year.
Although there hasn’t been much information on the iPad mini 3, especially in comparison to the iPhone 6, the latest report suggests it’ll adopt the tablet naming moniker introduced by the iPad Air last year.
A fresh rumour out of China states that the iPad mini 3 may launch as the iPad Air mini or iPad mini Air, highlighting its new slimmer profile.
According to the sources, the iPad Air mini will be 30 per cent thinner than its predecessor, which is a pretty mean feat. The current iPad mini 2 with Retina display measures up at 7.5mm thick, so shaving that down by 30 per cent would make the third-generation iPad mini just 5.25mm thick.
That would make it even slimmer than the 6.6mm Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, which offers am 8.4-inch Super AMOLED display within that slimline body.
Other reported features for the iPad Air mini include the Touch ID fingerprint sensor introduced with the iPhone 5S and the new Apple A8 processor.
This new processor, which should feature in all Apple’s upcoming products like the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2, is supposedly focusing on enhancing battery efficiency rather that serious performance upgrades.
The other Chinese rumour to be revealed is that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro release date may not occur until 2015, despite previous rumours suggesting it would arrive before the end of the year.
That’s according to David Hsieh, Vice President of the Great China Market at DisplaySearch, though as Apple’s tablet shipments for the year will only be around the same as 2013, suggesting the company won’t launch an addition size this year.
Apple usually launches its new iPad models in the autumn, so expect to see some new iOS 8 slates around September/October.
