Octa-core phones might have a purpose afterall
Octa-core smartphones might currently be seen as little more than the unnecessary result of an out of control specs war, but one manufacturer has suggested mobile gamers will soon need eight-core handsets.
Although octa-core smartphones have been seen by many as the tech equivalent of willy-waving, designed to grab headlines and impress on paper but offer little end user benefit over the current quad-core powerhouses, Kazam believes developers are starting to embrace the increased processing options.
“There are, particularly in the gaming world, people who will specifically use an octa-core phone,” James Atkins, Chief Marketing Officer at the British-based smartphone manufacturer said while addressing the future of the industry.
Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews he added: “There are a number of mobile games coming out which are specifically optimised for these kinds of devices.”
According to Atkins this range of octa-core utilising mobile games will grow rapidly, with the imminent influx of wearables also set to benefit from the high-performance CPUs.
“When you start adding wearables and things to it, which are using the phone in the background, multiple cores start doing more.”
He added: “The ultimate multitasker is another user. As we are putting more and more workload through the devices, I think multiple cores start to play a bigger role.”
Somewhat unsurprisingly, Atkins’ comments come in the wake of the first octa-core Kazam smartphone being unveiled, the Kazam Tornado 2.
As well as its 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6582 processor party-piece, the Kazam Tornado 2 adds a 5-inch, 720p HD display, 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera and 2GB to the mix.
