SteamBoy handheld Steam Machine revealed

A portable Steam Machine going by the name of SteamBoy has been announced.

Valve's Steam OS will launch on a range of Steam Machines in 2015, bringing the popular PC gaming platform into the living room.

But one company is determined to put the power of that platform in your hands, allowing you to carry it out and about. Announced on the final day of E3 last week, "SteamBoy is the first device that allows to play Steam games on the go," according to its makers.

Looking like a cross between the innovative Steam Controller designed specifically for Steam Machines and the ill-fated Gizmondo handheld (perhaps not a good sign), it's an unusual-looking thing to say the least.

In particular, the company has managed to work in the Steam Controller's unusual dual touch-sensitive thumb pads, which promise to allow mouse-like speed and precision.

You also get eight action buttons, four triggers, and two additional buttons on the rear of the device.

As for specs, SteamBoy Machines reveals that the SteamBoy "won't be as powerful as other announced Steam Machines in the same way [the] Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita performance is not comparable to Wii U or PlayStation 4."

It will feature a quad-core CPU, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 5-inch 16:9 display (resolution unknown).

Despite being modestly specced for a Steam Machine, the SteamBoy developer claims that "it will be possible to play the majority of current games in Steam."

The SteamBoy is expected to launch some time next year with support for Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.
