PS4 becomes UK’s fastest selling console of all time

Although Sony has yet to release official sales figures, latest reports have suggested that the newly launched PS4 has become the UK’s fastest selling console of all time.

Said to have eclipsed early sales of the rival Xbox One, retail tracking services have suggested that early PS4 sales have exceeded the eight year record held by the company’s own PSP offering.

With opening Xbox One sales said to have seen 150,000 Microsoft consoles sold during its first 48 hours on sale in the UK, the PS4 is believed to have smashed this figure, as well as the 185,000 opening weekend sales recorded by the PSP back in 2005.

With a number of retailers having backed the PS4 over the Xbox One, Sony’s next-gen console has proved more appealing to consumers, thanks in part to its more affordable price tag. While the PS4 price has been set at £349, the Xbox One will set you back £80 more, costing £429.

Although the PS4 is said to have broken UK sales records, the console’s launch has been marred slightly by delays to a number of key PS4 games, including Drive Club and Watch Dogs. Despite these delays, Sony’s Head of PlayStation for the UK, Fergal Gara, has suggested these postponements could actually help console sales moving forward.

The delays to games wasn’t quite as we planned but it has an upside,” Gara told us in an exclusive interview. He added that the delayed PS4 games “will help momentum into next year and help people get past the first 30 or so titles.”

Looking at day one sales, he stated: “Given the momentum and the demand there is for PlayStation 4, selling the early units doesn’t feel terribly difficult.”
