Nokia Lumia 625 Officially Launched - cheapest 4G Nokia

Nokia has officially unveiled the Lumia 625, a larger-screen alternative to the budget Lumia 620 Windows Phone 8 mobile.

Nokia's budget Windows Phone 8 range is expanding. Joining the Lumia 520 and Lumia 620 is the Nokia Lumia 625, a 4.7-inch mid-range Windows phone.

Its main spec cut is in its screen - where the high-end Lumia 925 has a 1,280 x 768 pixel display, the Lumia 625 uses a lower-resolution 800 x 480-pixel screen.

This results in a relatively low pixel density of 198 ppi. The similarly-sized HTC One has pixel density of 469ppi. Its screen won't appear super-sharp.

Other specs include a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz - it's similar to the CPU of the Lumia 925, but runs a little cooler than the 925's 1.5GHz model. It also have 512MB RAM, where the top Windows phones have moved up to 1GB RAM.

Like most lower-end Nokia Windows Phone 8 mobiles, the Lumia 625 has a microSD memory card slot, hidden under the removable plastic backplate. These backs come in five different colours.

The backplates have a double-layer finish designed to give an appearance of depth - as seen in the Lumia 620.

There's just 8GB of internal memory - not quite enough for a healthy music collection - so media fans will need to invest in a memory card.

It also lacks the high-end PureView camera of the Lumia 925. Instead, the Lumia 625 has a familiar 5-megapixel main sensor. Its secondary camera is a basic VGA snapper. It also lacks NFC and has no compass.

The Lumia 625 does come with the Lumia Smart Cam software lens, though, which offers a fast burst mode. It's the first lower-end Nokia to feature this camera software.

It makes a few compromises, then, but does have 4G connectivity. It's among the cheaper 4G enabled devices at present. Nokia says it's the company's cheapest 4G phone yet out.

The Lumia 625 has the same battery capacity as the Lumia 925, but we'll have to wait to get our hands on one to see how it performs in use.

Nokia has confirmed it'll be available from EE,Vodafone, O2, Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse in the UK. You'll be able to buy the Lumia 625 from September and it's expected to sell for around £200 on a pre-pay deal.
