First Google Glass photos appear online

The first pictures taken with Google Glass have appeared online, showing high-quality images despite the augmented reality tech being a little difficult to use.

Appearing on Twitter under the hashtag #throughglass, the first images taken using Google’s augmented reality headset have emerged online.

From what we’ve seen so far, the quality of the images looks pretty good, despite Google Glass only having a 5-megapixel camera on board.

Prototypes of Google Glass began shipping to developers this month, so the first user videos and images have started to appear online. About 1,000 users currently have their hands on the futuristic technology and reactions range from pure delight to scepticism.

“I… got to try Google Glass, if only for a few seconds,” said science fiction novelist William Gibson. “I was faintly annoyed at just how interesting I found the experience.”

“I will never live a day of my life from now on without it (or a competitor),” said technology enthusiast Robert Scoble. “It’s that significant.”

Other have been more cautious, worried about Google Glass’ potential to photograph and film people without their knowledge. The technology has already been banned from a selection of strip clubs, cinemas and casinos and has strong opposition from campaigners like Stop the Cyborg.

Steve Lee, a Google X Lab employee posted one of the first Google Glass images whilst driving his car in his home of San Francisco, followed shortly by another Google employee Sophia Yang who posted a picture of the Google Glass project office.

Other users have suggested the technology, still in prototype phase ahead of a general Google Glass launch in around a year, is still problematic. Another Google staff member, Sidney Chang, posted a photo of the office carpet suggesting aiming the camera could prove a little tricky.

Google Glass allows users to utilise a number of apps using voice commands that start with the phrase “Okay Glass”. This phrase followed by an instruction like take a photo, record a video or send a message instructs Google Glass to perform one of its many functions.
