Nvidia might have shown off the car of the future, but Parrot has just launched the dashboard of the moment.

The Parrot RNB6 is a unit that upgrades your standard jam jar into a smart one, much like the Now TV Box gives your telly smart skills. That means you can use apps from your phone on the bigger screen, making your journey safer and more convenient.

Parrot claims it's compatible with 90 per cent of cars on the market right now. As long as your motor can fit a double DIN-sized CD player, you're laughing.

The really cool thing is that it's OS agnostic. In other words, it can switch between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay at the touch of a button. So if you and your other half have different smartphones, you can both use the unit completely seamlessly. Which should hopefully help avoid a few arguments.

As well as all the apps on your mobile, Parrot also offers its own services on the device, according to The Verge which has gone hands-on with it. It has a dash cam that's capable of recording time-lapse videos, lane assist to make sure you're in the correct position to take that turn, and braking alerts based on the video feed. It will also play nice with your car's rear camera to provide parking assistance.

Plus it plugs into the OBD port in your car and gives you detailed breakdowns of your petrol mileage and driving habits. And it will help diagnose any problems, so you can go to the mechanic forearmed to avoid getting ripped off.
