Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online for PS4 will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play.
Usually, you’ll need a PlayStation Plus to access the online multiplayer experience of PS4 games, but Bethesda has revealed The Elder Scrolls Online is an exception to the rule.
You will be required to pay the same monthly subscription for The Elder Scrolls Online as PC and Mac users though.
There were rumours that anyone wanting to play The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 would have to pay two monthly fees, one for The Elder Scrolls itself and another for PlayStation Plus.
“A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to play The Elder Scrolls Online. PS4 players will only be required to pay the same monthly subscription associated with The Elder Scrolls Online that PC and Mac users will pay – nothing more”, said Matt Firor, Game Director at ZeniMax Online Studios during a Q&A session on the EU PlayStation Blog.
Unfortunately, there’s no news as to whether the Xbox One edition of The Elder Scrolls will follow the same format.
At the moment, you’ll need both an Xbox Live Gold subscription and an additional The Elder Scrolls Online membership to play the game on Microsoft’s next-gen console.
Bethesda has said it wishes for Xbox One gamers to be able to access the game without an Xbox Live Gold subscription in the past.
“We have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing, and seeing whether or not there’s any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only playing The Elder Scrolls Online and don’t want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay for the Elder Scrolls Online.”
“The answer right now is that’s the way it works, but it’s something that we’re aware of and we keep pushing on, to see if there’s something that can be done.”
The Elder Scrolls Online release date has been staggered, with the game arriving on PC and Mac first on April 4, followed by the Xbox One and PS4 editions in June 2014.
Unlimited access for the first 30 days after activation will be offered for free. After the initial month offer runs out, you’ll have to pay a £8.99 monthly fee to access the game and play online.
