HTC is readying a new tablet for release later this year, according to reports, but it will be powered by Windows 8 rather than Android
Market research company NPD DisplaySearch is the source of the rumour, claiming that the Taiwanese company will step away from its Google Android commitments to produce a Microsoft-powered slate.
Apparently, the HTC Windows 8 tablet will feature a 10.1-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display made by LG.
Such a device would be notable for a couple of reasons. For one thing, HTC has not produced a tablet since 2011's HTC Flyer (pictured), an innovative 7-inch Android tablet with a stylus and OnLive cloud gaming that failed to attain decent sales.
For another, HTC notably positioned itself as a key hardware partner during the Windows Phone 8 launch period. Its HTC 8X and HTC 8S surprised many (not least Nokia, we suspect) with their distinct design ethos and the core role they played in Microsoft's promotional efforts.
At a time when HTC's profits are at an alarming low and all of its Android bets seem to have been placed on a single device - the lovely HTC One - news of a possible alternative course is particularly interesting.
Is HTC simply continuing to hedge its bets and explore new avenues, or has its recent experience with Android and the stiflingly dominant force that is Samsung prompted it to look to less crowded pastures?
