Sledgehammer eying Advanced Warfare as new CoD sub-series

Sledgehammer Games has revealed its hopes for Advanced Warfare to become a new sub-series in the dominant Call of Duty franchise.

With Activision having alternated between Modern Warfare and Black Ops titles in recent years, in the wake of the franchise’s switch to a three year development cycle, Sledgehammer has expressed hope that Advanced Warfare will transform into CoD’s next longstanding sub-series.

“We are very focused on finishing Advanced Warfare right now but yeah, that [having Advanced Warfare start a new sub-series in the Call of Duty franchise] would be great,” Aaron Halon, Director of Product Development at Sledgehammer Games said speaking with TrustedReviews recently.

Remaining coy on plans for future Advanced Warfare titles, he added: “We love that idea but that’s really more for Activision. For us we really want to make sure that this delivers on everything we have been working on.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has been pencilled in for a November 4 release date, with the game to be set in the year 2054. Any further addition to the series would be unlikely to launch until 2017.

With the studio said to be ‘energised’ about the title’s potential, Halon has suggested that the possibilities surrounding the advanced soldier have left the developer with much scope for potential future releases.

“Ultimately, once we started finding what the core of our game was, that really got us energised about this concept of the advanced soldier and what they could do,” he told us.

“We are fans ourselves and we listen to the feedback about the franchise and so this was an area we felt that we could really express these concerns.

“We look at that stuff, but for us, if we are really giving the players new ways to play the advanced soldier, that’s ultimately what we are most excited about and very focussed on.”

He added: “We know that we’ve really added new ways to play Call of Duty.”
