Sony has announced the launch of the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, a new large-screen Android smartphone aimed at emerging markets.
You may remember the original Sony Xperia T, the predecessor to the Sony Xperia Z, which was released back in September 2012. It was perhaps most famous for being James Bond’s mobile of choice in Skyfall.
The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra is a rather different beast in many respects. The most obvious is that it features a 6-inch 720p Triluminous LCD display in place of the T’s 4.55-inch example.
While the Xperia T2 Ultra is a much larger device than the Sony Xperia T, it’s also a fair bit skinnier. At just 7.6mm, it’s about the thickness of an iPhone 5S. The Xperia T was a rather chunky 9.4mm thick, by comparison.
The new phablet is powered by an as-yet-unspecified quad-core Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1.4GHz, and is backed by 1GB of RAM. Storage is relatively scant at 8GB, but with the potential for expansion via a microSD card slot.
Like the Sony Xperia T, the T2 Ultra features a 13-megapixel camera, but it will come loaded with even more fancy photo apps and modes such as portrait retouch and AR effect. It’s also LTE 4G-compatible.
If the specs weren’t enough of a clue, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra also comes in a dual-SIM variant, called the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra Dual. This should tell you that it’s not really aimed at these shores. Rather, Sony is gunning for emerging markets in China, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.
Still, there’s no release date or pricing information available at present, so while it's unlikely, don’t discount a wider release altogether.
