Sony says PS4 teaser video is a fake

A very official looking E3 PS4 video appeared on YouTube last night showing the first glimpses of the next-gen console, but Sony has confirmed it is a fake.

The PS4 teaser video is a 44-second long video that shows the PS4 console for the first time. Sony has told Kotaku that the clip wasn’t produced or created by them, despite the video looking like it was created by a professional.

Featuring an excellent animated render of the PS4 console, it isn’t hard to see why people believed the teaser video was an official production.

However, there were a couple of incongruities that made people question its authenticity. Firstly is the shot that shows the logo beneath the disc tray on the console. Viewers will be able to clearly see a “Compact Disc” logo, but a Sony executive has already confirmed the next-gen console will not be compatible with CDs.

Plus the actual size of the console shown would be at huge risk of overheating. When Sony unveiled the PS4 in February, it explained the console would feature an eight-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and a powerful AMD GPU capable of reaching 1.84 teraFLOPS.

The power levels these components are capable of reaching would cause them to get very hot. If the console was the size shown in the E3 PS4 teaser, the chips would not be given sufficient space for heat ventilation.

Several sources have suggested that the video is part of an official marketing pitch by a professional agency to stir up internet fervour ahead of the official Sony E3 PS4 briefing on June 10.

It could well be the work of MOFILM, a firm recently hired by Sony to handle crowd-sourced advertising, and the teaser video has been leaked online post-pitch.

Either way, since the PS4 launch in February, fans have been waiting to get their first look at the actual console and with E3 just around the corner we may not have long to wait.
