Nokia Lumia 925 Unveiled - Lumia goes metal

Nokia has unveiled the Lumia 925, the first metal frame phone in the Windows Phone 8 Lumia range.

The Nokia Lumia 925 follows on from the camera-centric Lumia 920, addressing the criticisms of the phone’s heavy weight and chunky body.

It’s slimmer, lighter and finished in metal and plastic rather than the Lumia-staple polycarbonate.

The rear of the phone remains plastic, but the edge is a band of aluminium that functions as the phone’s antenna, as well as giving the harder, cool feel of metal.

Colours available are a little more muted than the Lumia norm, available in black and white variants.

Nokia Lumia 925 – Specs
Otherwise, the Nokia Lumia 925 has more familiar specs. It has a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4.5-inch 720p resolution screen.

It’s a unibody phone that uses an iPhone-like pop-out SIM slot, enabling a more elegant design.

Like every other Lumia phone released this year, the Nokia Lumia 925 runs Windows Phone 8 and comes pre-installed with

Nokia’s HERE suite of apps. This is the re-branded form of the long-standing Nokia Maps, and unlike Google Maps it lets you save maps of whole countries for use offline.

Nokia Lumia 925 – Camera
Nokia claims to have “advanced” the Lumia series’s camera tech in the Lumia 925 too. However the phone has a 5-megapixel camera, down from the 8-megapixel sensor of the Lumia 920, although it does have optical image stabilisation for solid low-light performance.

The moves forward are not necessarily in sensor tech, but in the algorithms used by the phone’s imaging engine to reduce noise in low light. We’ll have to see how it fares at review.

Nokia has also redesigned the Lumia camera interface, adding additional modes including Smart Camera. This takes multiple exposures per shot to make it easier for true novices to get decent shots without trying.

Smart Camera also features simulated shallow depth of field effects, which are tricky to obtain with a mobile phone camera.

Nokia Lumia 925 – Wireless Charging
The Nokia Lumia 925 also has integrated wireless charging points on its rear. Three metal points on its rear connect with a wireless charging case accessory, available separately.

The wireless charging case comes in the brighter shades associated with the Lumia series, including red and yellow. This case then interfaces with a wireless charging plate, also a separate purchase.

Nokia Lumia 925 – Release Date and Price
The Nokia Lumia 925 is similar specs-wise to the Lumia 928, a recently-unveiled phone sold into the US network Verizon as an exclusive. It'll sell in Europe for around 469 Euro.

Nokia has confirmed that in the UK the Lumia 925 will be available through Vodafone, and will ship from June.
