Samsung Galaxy S4: 6 million units sold

Over six million Samsung Galaxy S4 units have been sold since the flagship went on sale on April 26, according to an unnamed Samsung executive.

The latest Samsung flagship has broken sales records, globally shipping four million units in the first five days of the Samsung Galaxy S4 being on sale.

“As of the end of April, we supplied four million Galaxy S4 handsets to telecommunication operators around the world,” said the Samsung executive to Korean news site The Chosunilbo.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 beat the previous record of 21 days to 3 million units held by its predecessor the Samsung Galaxy S3. The previous flagship itself also broke sales records held by the Samsung Galaxy S2 that took 55 days to reach 3 million units.

Heavily predicted to be a fast-selling and very popular handset, the Samsung Galaxy S4 sales are set to continue at the current pace, according to the Samsung executive.

“As of Friday [May 10], we have sold more than 6 million units and we predict that we could break the 10 million mark by as early as the end of this month.”

These figures are not for actual user sales, but of sales made to retailers and operators, which has caused Samsung to be criticised in the past. Its biggest rival Apple always issues user sales figures, meaning the two cannot always be directly compared on sales numbers.

To put this into perspective, Apple’s iPhone 5 sold 5 million handsets to users in its opening weekend, meaning that even when these figures are compared the Apple flagship still comes out on top.

Packing a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and 2GB of RAM, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a powerhouse Android smartphone running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS with Samsung’s TouchWiz Nature UX interface.

Just 7.9mm thick, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 5-inch Super AMOLED Screen with Full 1920 x 1080p HD resolutions and a 441ppi image density.

With a 13-megapixel camera in the rear, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 2-megapixel camera in front making the most of its new camera functionalities. Also packing NFC and 4G connectivity, the flagship has the choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB internal storage.
