Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Mega 5.8 details emerge

New details have emerged surrounding the huge smartphone duo, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8.

Despite their huge screen sizes, the Samsung Galaxy Mega smartphones will offer little new to the current range of Samsung smartphones, including the soon to be released Samsung Galaxy S4.

Both handsets are monsters of smartphones, falling into the rather awkward category of “phablet” devices that feel a little too large in the hand to be classed as mobiles.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 specs emerged courtesy of the often reliable rumour mill SamMobile, which claims the handset will sport a 5.8-inch qHD 960 x 540p TFT display, an 8-megapixel camera in the rear and 2-megapixels up front.

With a processor clocked at 1.4GHZ boasting 1.5GB of RAM, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 will also come with Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity. The 5.8-inch handset would run on Android 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the Samsung Nature UX interface, all powered by a 2600mAh battery within a 9.7mm thick body.

Specs for the larger Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 are currently a little scarcer. Korean website Daum has suggested the monolith will pack a dual-core Exynos processor, the same 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel camera duo as the Galaxy Mega 5.8, but little more is known about the device.

It could sport a similar screen resolution as the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8, potentially limited to qHD image quality as well as two colour options from launch: black and white.

Although there are no picture yet available for the Samsung Galaxy Mega handsets, both devices could be with us as soon as June.

The largest smartphones currently offered by the South Korean electronics manufacturer are the Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which offer screen sizes of 5.3-inches and 5.5-inches respectively.

Both of these handsets have already blurred the lines between tablet and smartphone, so if the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 does come to market, it could be more of a rival to the likes of the iPad mini than to other large smartphones like the HTC One or Sony Xperia Z.
