Ouya responds to negative console reviews

Ouya has responded to the negative reviews that have already started to appear on technology websites, saying the console is still in its “preview period”.

The Android console began shipping to anyone who banked its Kickstarter campaign at the end of last month, but some rather uncomplimentary reviews have already appeared online.

Technology review sites like Engadget and The Verge have said the console did not appear ready for release, but Ouya has responded to such claims saying it wasn’t actually ready for review.

The consoles shipped to Kickstarter backers are part of what Ouya deems its “preview period” used to allow supporters a first look at the console before it goes on general sale on June 4.

This “preview period” is for early backers to “test [the] eco-system and fine-tune the experience” ahead of a full retail launch to make the Ouya the best console it can be.

Ouya has confirmed that it has not sent any press units out yet, due to the fact the console is not ready for review yet.

“We will be making Ouya review units available in early to mid-May so that you are able to review the more complete consumer experience and prepare your coverage in time for the June 4th retail launch,” said an Ouya representative. “To clarify for you – Ouya has sent no review units out to press. Any reviews you have seen online are a result from individuals who received early backer units from supporting our Kickstarter.”

On April 5, Ouya wrote a blog post not only celebrating the Ouya console was just 60 days from launch, but also clarifying that “there is still much to do” before the general release.

“The software, store, games will continue to evolve and grow, and as early backers who have exclusive access during this period before launch, we want you to be a part of that process.”

The console maker is changing and improving the console before launch and is currently working on new features: “external storage for games; simpler game install process; more metrics for developers; controller support for video players; more payment options.”

Although an Ouya UK release date has yet to be confirmed, Ouya will go on sale in the US from June 4 or UK fans can pre-order one now from Game for £99.99.
