Ouya now has over 10,000 developers

The Android Ouya console now has 10,000 registered developers working on it, according to the company.

Kellee Santiago, Ouya’s Head of Developer Relations, said the console has now passed the significant 10,000 developer milestone, since shipping to Kickstarter campaign backers at the end of the last month.

Although Santiago hasn’t revealed any of the studios currently onboard with the console, she did note that some announcements would be made in the “upcoming few weeks.”

According to Joystiq though, there are already several high-profile studios rumoured to be working on titles for the Ouya. These include Polytron, Double Fine, Airtight Games and Minority Media.

Ouya Features

The news comes after Ouya representatives responded to the negative reviews appearing on technology websites, stating the console was still in its “preview period”, which aims to “test [the eco-system and fine-tune the experience”.

An Ouya UK release date has yet to be confirmed, but the console will go on sale in the US from June 4. UK fans can pre-order one from Game for £99.99 now though.

The Ouya console will ship with an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core SoC with 1GB of RAM, similar to the Google Nexus 7 tablet and will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Designed to play modified Android games at Full 1080p HD resolutions, the Ouya will also features a USB 2.0 port, HDMI support and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. An Ethernet connection and 8GB of Flash storage are also present.

During the “preview period” the Ouya is currently undergoing, the company said “the software, store, games will continue to evolve and grow” and it will be introducing “external storage for games; simpler game install process; more metrics for developers; controller support for video players; and more payment options” before general availability in June.

The console is bundled with one controller that features the standard array of console buttons coupled with a touch sensitive trackpad, similar to that featured in the PS Vita and DualShock 4 controller of the PlayStation 4.
