Samsung Galaxy S5 specs teased by leaked benchmark

Claimed Samsung Galaxy S5 benchmark

A range of claimed Samsung Galaxy S5 specs have been teased once again, with a leaked AnTuTu benchmark offering a reported insight into the upcoming phone.

A benchmark test on the Samsung SM-G900F, widely believed to be the official product name of the international Samsung Galaxy S5 variant, the latest leaks have hinted that the Samsung Galaxy S4 could retain its 1080p Full HD display, despite many reports the flagship phone would make the jump to a 2K panel.

While we must stress that these reports should be taken with a considerable pinch of salt, if accurate, the retention of a Full HD panel would be somewhat disappointing and take away one of the S5’s most tantalising rumoured features.

Elsewhere, the 64bit processor previously teased by Samsung spokespeople could also miss touching down on the S5, with the benchmarks suggesting a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor has been given the nod for the flagship phone.

Aside from the lack of a 2K display and new Snapdragon CPU, the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 specs leak is a pretty familiar affair, backing up recent claims of another high-end Android powerhouse.

With Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS tipped to run the show, the leaked benchmark has claimed the Samsung Galaxy S5 will play host to 3GB of RAM, an Adreno 330 GPU and a 16-megapixel rear-mounted camera.

While a 2-megapixel secondary snapper is tipped to sit up front, the Samsung Galaxy S5 specs sheet will reportedly be rounded off by 32GB of internal storage.

Although not covered by the leaked benchmarks, earlier this week further Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours suggested that the handset will sport a scratch-resistant diamond metal body. The phone is widely expected to make its first official appearance during Q1 2014.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 update scrapped amid issues

Microsoft has confirmed it has pulled its latest Surface Pro 2 update amid reports that the software patch has caused a number of issues with the Windows 8 tablet.

With many early adopters of the company’s latest high-end tablet offering reporting severe battery drain issues following the installation of the latest Surface Pro 2 update, others have claimed that the software patch has caused more widespread hardware failures including boot and sleep issues.

Making the announcement via the company’s official user forums, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the Surface Pro 2 update was being pulled “to ensure the best experience for our customers.”

They stated: “To ensure the best experience for our customers during the holiday season, we have taken steps to remove the update for Surface Pro 2 that was previously published through Windows Update on December 10th, 2013.”

The official company representative added: “We are working to release an alternative update package after the holidays.”

Although new Surface Pro 2 owners will be saved from the hardware depleting update, those who have already downloaded the patch remain unimpressed by Microsoft’s latest move.

In one of many angry comments, one Surface Pro 2 owner, known as L.Sobrado, stated: “What about everybody who got messed up? Can you guys roll this thing back? My surface no longer charges to 100 per cent, it refuses to even try.”

Microsoft has yet to respond too such comments.

LG to unveil 105-inch 21:9 curved Ultra HD TV at CES 2014

LG as confirmed that it has a world’s first planned for CES 2014, with the Korean manufacturer announcing it will unveil a 105-inch curved Ultra HD TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

It what is shaping up to be the ultimate TV for movie buffs with a few quid to spare, LG has announced that the 105-inch curved Ultra HD monster will be officially showcased during the Las Vegas based tech convention on January 7.

“LG Display has kept its dominant position in the display market with innovative and differentiated technologies,” Yong-kee Hwang, Senior Vice President and head of LG Display’s TV Business Unit said.

“With a resolution of 11 million pixels, the 105-inch curved LCD panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market, offering exceptional world-class value to our customers.”

Set to be dubbed the LG 105UB9, the 105-inch curved TV will play host to a 21:9 CinemaScope display with a stunning 5120 x 2160 pixel Ultra HD resolution.

Given the TV’s size, LG has confirmed that it has been forced to develop a number of new technologies to allow the sizeable panel to curve. Having refined its TFT circuitry the company has stated that the 105UB9 will off uniform colours and brightness.

“We’re proud to reveal our 105-inch CURVED ULTRA HD TV at the world’s largest technology event,” In-kyu Lee, Vice President and head of the Home Entertainment Company’s TV division at LG Electronics stated.

He added: “Claiming the world’s first and the world’s largest titles, LG’s 105UB9 employs cutting-edge technology to provide a truly unique viewing experience. We will continue to drive the next generation TV market and demonstrate that with LG, it’s all possible.”

CES 2014 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada between Tuesday January 7 and Friday January 10 although a number of major announcements will be made to the press on Monday January 6.

HTC One crowned 2013 TrustedReviews Phone of the Year

HTC One named 2013 TrustedReviews Phone of the Year

The HTC One has put the Taiwanese smartphone maker firmly back on the map, and now the leading Android handset has been crowned Phone of the Year at the 2013 TrustedReviews Awards.

In one of the closest fought categories of the year’s awards, the HTC One saw off stiff competition from a range of Android rivals, as well as Apple’s latest smartphone offering.

Having been first unveiled back in February in the days leading up to MWC 2013, the HTC One is far from the most recent, or indeed specs impressive handset currently doing the rounds, but is a phone which has changed the smartphone sector for good as one of the first truly desirable and high-end Android phones.

A category which split the judges’ decisions, the HTC One narrowly came out victorious against runners ups the iPhone 5S and Android 4.4 KitKat introducing Google Nexus 5. As well as playing host to a highly desirable brushed metal design, the HTC One has been bestowed with a bevy of premium innards with a 4.7-inch Full HD display lining up alongside a 1.7GHz quad-core processor.

What’s more, the company’s Sense UI has helped create one of the most user-friendly and intuitive smartphone experiences around.

“It’s not surprising that the most hotly contested and closely matched category at this year’s awards was the Phone of the Year,” TrustedReviews Editor Evan Kypreos stated.

“Like 12 Angry Men the decision pulled and swayed from one phone to the other. It was agreed that the iPhone 5S is probably the best all-rounder and the Nexus 5 is a fantastic phone for the money, but the fact that the HTC One finally proved once and for all that Android phones can be slick and hugely desirable gave it the edge.”

While the HTC One has been crowned the 2013 TrustedReviews Phone of the Year, attention has already turned to its replacement, with a number of HTC One 2 rumours currently doing the rounds.

Tipped to make the jump to a larger 5-inch display, the HTC One 2 is expected to pair its 1080p Full HD panel with Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS and a new quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU.

Earlier this week we confirmed that the PS4 had beaten the Xbox One to take the title of the 2013 Console of the Year while the iPad Air was announced as Tablet of the Year. Yesterday GTA 5 was named Game of the Year.

Nintendo is "experimenting" with iOS apps

Nintendo has confirmed it is experimenting with some iOS apps, something fans have wanted to see for quite some time.

Although the Nintendo 3DS and the company’s other handheld consoles are selling well, consumers are opting not to buy them because they already own a perfectly adequate mobile gaming device in their phone or tablet.

Critics have often suggested that Nintendo should branch out into iOS apps, which could help the company earn some more money.

It seems this is already a plan for the Japanese gaming giant, as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo is “experimenting” with the iOS mobile platform.

“We recognise that there are a lot of smartphones and tablets out there, and so what we’re doing is we’re being very smart in how we use these devices as marketing tools for our content,” said Fils-Aime during an interview

Before you get too excited, it doesn’t seem Nintendo will be launching full Nintendo games on iOS, but rather marketing tie-ins featuring your favourite Nintendo characters.

“We’re also doing a lot of experimentation of what I would call the little experiences you can have on your smartphone and tablet that will drive you back to your Nintendo hardware. It’s largely going to be much more marketing activity-orientated, but we’ve done little things where there’s some element of gameplay – a movement, a shaking, something like that.”

You might be able to expect a Nintendo themed endless runner or other such content. It doesn’t seem like Nintendo will ever directly port Zelda or Mario games to iOS or Android.

“We believe our games are best played and best enjoyed on our devices and so the full game play will only be on Nintendo devices.”

LG webOS TV to debut at CES 2014

LG will be showing off its first webOS-powered television set at CES 2014 next month, it’s been confirmed.

Back in February, LG surprised everyone by purchasing the pioneering yet ultimately failed smartphone OS, WebOS, from HP.

LG announced at the time that it would not be directing the slick operating system into its own smartphones and tablets, which will continue to run on Android, but would load it into its smart TV range. Now, almost a year later, LG is about set to do just that.

The company will debut its webOS TV at CES 2014, which takes place from January 7. Zdnet Korea reports that LG researcher Hong Sung-pyo revealed the news at a semiconductor event recently held in Seoul, South Korea.

He also revealed that LG’s first webOS TV would run on a 2.2GHz dual-core CPU backed by 1.5GHz of RA, which will no doubt help power webOS’s inherent multitasking capabilities.

LG has previously revealed that it would alter the webOS interface to better fit its new TV home. Whether the OS will retain its influential card-based multitasking system - which has since been copied by iOS, Android and Windows Phone - is unclear.

The intention is evidently to create a smart TV interface that’s as slick, intuitive and powerful as separate TV streaming boxes like Apple TV and Roku. Adding more extensive online functionality is another core reason for converting webOS to the living room.
