Smartphones and tablets might now be all the rage, but that hasn’t stopped Lenovo from shipping the 100 millionth ThinkPad computer.
Having clearly missed the memo that the laptop and desktop markets are dead, the Chinese giant has confirmed it hit this phenomenal milestone in the final weeks of 2014.
Making the announcement ahead of CES 2015, the manufacturer stated: “About a week ago, ThinkPad hit a rather unique milestone, we actually shipped out the 100 millionth ThinkPad.”
Discussing the milestone achievement, Steve Gilbert, Director of Worldwide Product Marketing within Lenovo’s commercial group added: “The journey started in 1992 with the ThinkPad 700 and there have been a lot of great customer experiences and a lot of great customer stories along the way to get to 100 million.”
Looking to create a bit of pomp and circumstance around the achievement, Lenovo has gone as far as naming the milestone machine.
“When we started making plans for this product, we had to give the actual unit itself, and that unit is called Eve,” Gilbert told us.
He added: “Eve is actually taking on a life of her own. She has become a digital persona and she is going to have a Twitter handle and all kinds of things happening to her throughout the year. She will be at CES so you can come get your picture taken with Eve.
“We are very proud of her.”
So, we hear you ask, what model of device is this record-setting 100 millionth ThinkPad? Well, it’s a brand new model altogether.
“Eve is one of the new X1 Carbons that we will be launching at CES,” Gilbert revealed.
“It is the third-generation of X1 Carbon and really the idea behind the changes we made was essentially, how to we take the world’s greatest Ultrabook and make it better?”
