Google has revealed a major new update for its world-beating Google Maps application for iOS and Android.
The new apps feature the brand new 2014 Material Design language that’ll underpin the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.
Alongside the design refresh, which promises brighter colours and “real life shadows” there’s also a few new features for Google Maps users to enjoy.
As well as the walking, driving and public directions, the app now offers estimated times of arrivals and fares for the upstart taxi serve Uber. That feature relies on having the Uber app installed.
Google Maps patrons in the United States will also be able to book dinner reservations through the app, thanks to integration with the Open Table platform.
Google has also added quick access to the useful Explore feature, which enables users to check out local amenities, directly from the map view. This will particularly aid users who’re checking out new areas.
There’s more too, Google explains: “By tapping on a place’s info sheet at the bottom of your screen, you’ll send an info layer gliding up to the top, showing you photos, reviews, and more. And for the adventurous souls looking for a new place to dine or visit, you’ll see more to Explore at the bottom of your map.
“For Google Maps, giving you useful options and information is always in vogue. So as you’re traveling this holiday season, don’t forget to open up your Maps app for all the navigation help we have to offer—now with a fun new look.”
The Google Maps revamps follows updates for the company's Gmail and Google Calendar apps, which also incorporate the new Material Design.
The new version of the app will be available to download with the next couple of weeks.
