Samsung Galaxy Gear now free with the Note 3

High street retailer Phones 4u has started offering the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch for free when buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a saving of £300.

With the Samsung-branded, Android-powered smartwatch having got off to something of a rocky start to life, failing to fully capture consumers’ attentions, the costly Samsung Galaxy Gear is now being bundled with the manufacturer’s latest phablet offering.

Available for a limited time only, Phones 4u has confirmed that it will be giving away free Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches until November 14. The techy timepiece will be packaged with the Note 3 when the handset is taken out on contract.

With the Samsung Galaxy Gear having been unveiled at IFA 2013 earlier this year, the camera and speaker incorporating, smartphone syncing wrist wear was until this week compatible only with the Note 3. Earlier this week a Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update bring Gear compatibility to the flagship phone.

While the Samsung Galaxy Gear, which lets you receive texts and calls to your wrists, is priced at £300 on its own, the smartwatch started at a disadvantage to the rival Sony Smartwatch 2 which came free with a Sony Xperia Z1 from the start.

Last month it was suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Gear was suffering from 30 per cent return rates as early adopters quickly became unenamoured with the touchscreen hosting gadget.

In our recent Samsung Galaxy Gear review we awarded the smartwatch just 4/10 stating it “is under supported, overpriced and feels like a rushed effort, made to beat the competition, and rumoured competition, that has failed to achieve its potential.”
