LG has launched a new wearable communication device, but this one's aimed at parents looking to keep track of their kids.
The LG Kizon can't boast the same Android Wear smarts as the LG G Watch, but it could prove to be even more precious to its users. Or rather, to the parents of its users.
Yes, this is a smartwatch that's designed to be worn by young children. The Kizon - or 'KizON' to use LG's maddening typography - is a colourful wristband that comes with Wi-Fi and GPS to help parents keep track of their tots.
At any time, a parent can log into the accompanying Kizon Android app on their phone or tablet and see where their kid is. They can also set location reminders, which notify them of the child's whereabouts at set times throughout the day.
But the LG Kizon goes beyond being some kind of benign prison ankle monitor. With a touch of its one chunky button, kids can call their parents, or some other preset phone number.
Parents can also call their kids through the Kizon, of course, but with an extra layer of power. If the kid doesn't pick up after 10 seconds, the call is connected regardless, and the adults can listen in to what's going on in little Timmy's world.
Given its simple functions and lack of advanced components like a screen or a multi-core processor, the LG Kizon doesn't have the same battery concerns as proper smartwatches. In fact, it'll last 36 hours on a single charge. Parents will receive a notification when the battery drops below 25 percent.
In order to keep the devices on little wrists, the LG KizON will be available with a range of accessories featuring popular animation characters, as well as in three basic colours: pink, blue, and green.
According to LG, the LG Kizon will launch in South Korea on July 10 (tomorrow), and will make its way to Europe and the US in the third quarter of 2014. Pricing details to follow.
