The PS4 VR could be days from reality
Next week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) will play host to the official unveiling of the heavily rumoured Sony PS4 VR headset, latest reports have suggested.
Having previously been tipped for a GDC showing, new sources have now stepped forward to again suggest the PS4 compatible virtual reality headset will make its first formal appearance at the San Francisco-based show on March 18.
Citing “developers familiar with the tech,” gaming publication Edge has claimed that the PS4 VR headset will be unveiled during GDC.
What’s more, according to the latest reports, prototype PS4 VR headsets are already being trialled by developers – although with high development costs and an unproven consumer market it is not believed any devs have as yet started work on compatible games.
With Sony holding a GDC 2014 conference on March 18 dubbed “Driving the future of innovation,” the Japanese manufacturer has seemingly given itself a strong platform from which to launch its PS4 VR headset.
The event, which will kick off at 5:45pm in San Francisco (1:45am on Wednesday, March 19 GMT) will be hosted by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Shuhei Yoshida.
SCE’s Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov, who have worked on the PlayStation Eye and PS Move respectively are also listed as spokespeople for the conference which is shaping up to be one of the highlights of GDC 2014.
The PS4 VR headset is shaping up to be a direct rival to the much talked about Oculus Rift headset. Although Oculus Rift Crystal Cove prototype has taken the VR headset to new levels since its CES showcase back in January, it has been suggested the PS4 VR headset is already ahead of the original Oculus offering.
GDC 2014 will run between March 17 and 21 at the Mascone Centre, San Francisco, California.
