Pokémon comes to iPad

Pokémon TCG Online is out now for iPad, bringing Nintendo's premier series to a non-Nintendo platform.

It's the day many could never see coming - a major Nintendo IP coming to a rival platform. And yet Pokémon TCG Online isn't a new PS4 or PS Vita game.

Rather, it's for Apple's iPad. It's available right now on the App Store as a free download.

Pokémon TCG Online is a deck-building game - the casual strategy genre made popular by the likes of Blizzard's Hearthstone. It lets you trade and battle with other players from around the world in expanded Top Trumps style, using collectible virtual playing cards containing your favourite Pokémon.

In actual fact, Pokémon TCG Online is a port of a web game that's been available on the Pokémon website for some time now - but obviously with touchscreen controls and a bit of extra spit an polish. Progress in this new version can even be carried over into that original desktop version.

You'll need an internet connection (hence the "Online" bit) and an iPad with a Retina display to work. That's right, all you original iPad mini owners are fresh out of luck, as well as obviously iPad 1 and iPad 2 users.

Naturally, this being a freemium game, there are in-app purchases to contend with, though you'll be given a free starter pack to get you up and running.

Now, about that iPad Zelda game...
