Xbox One price cut sees console sales top PS4

Microsoft is finally competing with Sony again as reports claim the latest Xbox One price cut has seen sales of the console top those of the PS4.

With the PS4 having dominated the sales war since both new devices touched down last November, retail insiders have reported the Xbox One outsold Sony’s console last week in the wake of recent price reductions.

While the Xbox One originally launched with a lofty £429.99 price tag, the 360 follow-on is now available for just £329.99. In contrast, the PS4 has retained its £349.99 fee since day one.

Citing ‘an anonymous retail source,” industry publication MCV has claimed Xbox One sales jumped a massive 155 per cent week-on-week during the past seven days.

Although the latest Xbox One price cut is seemingly the key driving factor in this sharp rise, last Friday’s FIFA 15 release date is also believed to have been a key contributor to the increased interest.

Highlighting the impact of the EA title, PS4 sales rose 80 per cent during the same timeframe.

Despite a week in the lead seat, it is too early to say whether or not the latest price cut can help the Xbox One outsell the PS4 on a regular basis.

For those holding out for a PS4 price drop, you might have quite a wait on your hands.

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently, Fergal Gara, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK told us a PS4 price cut was still “some way off”.

“There are no short term price decisions and nothing to announce here on price,” he said speaking during E3.

“Over time we will always look at when there might be an opportunity to reach a broader market and take the price down as technology matures, but that could be some way off.”
