The Last of Us becomes fastest selling PS3 game, 3.4m copies sold

The Last of Us has become the fastest selling new software title for the PS3, selling 3.4 million copies in the first three weeks of its release.

Launching on June 14, The Last of Us had sold 3.4 million copies by July 3 making it the fast selling new software title in the entire PS3 history.

Understandably it is now the fastest selling PS3 game of 2013 as well.

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios President. “The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that."

On July 8 it was announced that The Last of Us had topped the UK All Format Gaming Chart for the fourth consecutive week, breaking the 2013 record, previously held by Bioshock Infinite and Dead Island: Riptide for three weeks at the top.

"SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experience that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.”

Released just after the PS4 E3 2013 event, The Last of Us was launched right at the end of the PS3’s lifecycle, taking full advantage of all the technical grunt the now nearly eight-year old console has to offer.

“You can moan that it’s linear, that it denies players real choice and that some of the means used to prevent you leaving the current bubble are clearly artificial,” reads the TrustedReviews review. “Yet when you’re playing it, none of this matters. What matters is Joel and Ellie, getting them to their destination and taking this rich story to its end.”

“The Last of Us might not be the most stunningly original or mind-blowing game you’ll play this year, but it’s an intelligent, polished and grimly satisfying work of gaming art.”
