James Cameron hits out at Hollywood's treatment of 3D
Oscar-winning director hits out at Hollywood’s use of 3D in films claiming it's only included to drive profits.
Avatar director James Cameron believes blockbuster movies like Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel are “not using 3D properly”.
Speaking at the Tag DF art, design and technology conference in Mexico, Cameron hit out at Hollywood saying, "[It's] one thing [to shoot] in 3D and another to convert to 3D".
Cameron went on to to suggest that movie studios were simply just trying to make more money and were "pushing 3D to directors who are not comfortable or do not like 3D".
Using the examples of summer blockbusters Man of Steel and Iron Man 3, Cameron felt these films did not need to have 3D saying, "If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to be spectacular [and] perfect".
Cameron’s Academy Award-winning film Avatar is still considered to be the film that gave 3D the mainstream push in cinemas, adding a truly immersive and enjoyable dimension to the movie-going experience.
In the home meanwhile, 3D is still struggling to take off. The news that the BBC has put 3D trials on hold for three years casts further doubt on the long-term success of the 3D platform.
Head of BBC, Kim Shillinghaw revealed that the UK public hadn't taken to 3D as expected and that only half of the people with 3D TVs decided to watch the London 2012 opening ceremony in 3D last year.
Cameron still intends to use 3D for the sequels to Avatar and once he is done with the trilogy is expected to turn his attention to a film adaptation of the manga series Battle Angel.
