Lenovo working on super-thin MacBook Pro with Retina Display beater

Lenovo is reportedly working on a super-thin 13-inch ultrabook with an extremely high resolution display, which could give the MacBook Pro with Retina Display something to think about.

Chinese website Yesky is reporting that Lenovo is building a prototype of the advanced ultrabook, and is calling it the ThinkPad 9 Slim.

As the name suggests, the ThinkPad 9 Slim is very skinny indeed, measuring a mere 9.9mm thick. That's around half the size of the MacBook Air, and is closer to smartphone territory than it is to ultrabooks.

In addition, it weighs just 990 grams, thanks in no small part to its space-age carbon fibre construction. Continuing the Apple comparison, that's considerably lighter than the 1.62 kg MacBook Pro 13-inch with Retina Display.

Despite this slight frame, the ThinkPad 9 Slim appears to pack a punch. Its 13-inch display crams in an incredible resolution of 3200 x 1800. By way of a comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display has a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

What's unclear at this point is whether the ThinkPad 9 Slim is just Lenovo showing off what it can do, rather than a viable and marketable device that's set for retail. If the company can cram in some decent internal specs and get it to market with a competitive price, Apple could have formidable rival in the ultrabook category.
