Samsung Galaxy S4 Active officially unveiled as waterproof S4 variant

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has been officially unveiled with the previously mooted Samsung Galaxy S4 spinoff bring waterproof ruggedness to its flagship phone.

Landing a little over a month after the original Samsung Galaxy S4 hit retailers, the repeatedly leaked Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has been announced just days after fellow spinoff, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini entered the realms of reality.

“The Galaxy S4 Active is the newest addition to the Galaxy series and is purposefully designed for active users who love the outdoors,” JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung said. “Samsung has taken the innovative features of the Galaxy S4 and added breakthrough protective design elements to create a device that thrives in an active environment and is built for a lifestyle of travel and exploration.”

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Features

Building on the strong, market leading foundations of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active throws an IP67 waterproof, dustproof and drop proof protective coating for those with more demanding needs.

Featuring a fully sealed form factor akin to that of the Sony Xperia Z, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active can be submerged under 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes without threat of damage. The handset is also protected against pesky spilt drinks or unexpected trips to the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Although the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active camera has been dropped to an 8-megapixel offering from the stock handset’s 13-megapixel snapper, thanks to its waterproof capabilities, the Active boasts an Aqua Mode for improved underwater snaps.

Like the original S4 before it, the Samsung Galaxy S4 hosts a 1.9GHz quad-core processor and a 5-inch Full HD display with a stunning 443 pixels-per-inch image density.

Running Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS direct from the box, a second 2-megapixel forward-facing camera makes the S4 Active cut alongside NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and 2GB of RAM. The handset sports a 2600mAh Lithium-Ion battery.

Measuring in at 9.1mm thick and 151g in weight, the S4 Active is 1.2mm thicker and 21g heavier than its sibling. The S4 Active supports all the same software features as its predecessor, with the likes of Dual Shot camera and Smart Scroll available to users.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Release Date and Price

Despite confirming the handset’s existence, Samsung has failed to announce a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active release date. Set to be showcased at the manufacturer’s upcoming mobile launch event on June 20, a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active price is also still shrouded in mystery.
