LG Optimus G2 launch event could happen on May 30

LG has sent out press invitations to a launch event in May that could be used to launch the next smartphone in the Optimus G lineup, the LG Optimus G2.

The invitation shows a slimline black handset with a colourful butterfly emerging from the screen in a paint splat effect.

Baring the tagline “Imagination Begins”, LG has deliberately emphasised the G in imagination to hint the launch of the next instalment in the LG Optimus G smartphone range.

From the leaks we’ve seen so far, the pictured handset could be the LG Optimus G2 due to its slightly protruding rear camera. The handset was rumoured to be too thin to support traditional smartphone buttons, so no wonder the camera’s poking out a bit.

Rumours suggest that LG could introduce a new IPS LCD display in the LG Optimus G2, offering a higher contrast ratio, resolution and brightness.

The super-slim LG Optimus G2 could feature a 5-inch Full 1080p HD IPS LCD display powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the LG Optimus G2 could pack 13-megapixels into that protruding rear snapper.

Head of Mobile Communication for Europe at LG, Won Kim, has already confirmed that the “LG Optimus G2 is coming in Q3” 2013, speaking to TrustedReviews in Korea last month.

“We don’t want to hide everything but similarly we don’t want to promote everything about the G2 in advance,” said Kim. “To some extent we have to tease the features and specifications through channels, it is somewhat premature for me to talk about the G2 in terms of specifications.”

Kim did say that the LG Optimus G2 would be an innovative smartphone in comparison to the South Korean company’s current range of handsets.

“G2 is going to be something different, something unique and we have needed to be very creative.”

However, the invite merely implies that “one of the Optimus G series” handsets will launch at the event, not necessarily confirming the LG Optimus G2 unveiling, but we’ll keep you posted come May 30.
