Game of Thrones has claimed an unwanted crown for a third consecutive year, being named the most pirated TV show of 2014.

According to figures compiled by Torrent Freak, the year’s Game of Throne’s season finale was illegally downloaded a staggering 8.1 million times.

As well as being almost twice as popular as the next most torrented TV show, this figure is greater than the 7.16 million viewers who legally watched the show on US television.

Rounding out the year’s top three most pirated shows, Breaking Bad was illegally downloaded 4.2 million times, just edging out the 3.6 million downloads of The Walking Dead.

According to the findings, dodgy downloads of the most popular TV shows have risen throughout 2014, regularly exceeding the legitimate viewership numbers.
