Google Nexus 5 could be set to launch November 1 in white

Google’s next flagship Android smartphone, the Google Nexus 5, looks set to launch on November 1 in both black and white, according to a recent tip.

Recent days have seen a number of claims relating to the Google Nexus 5 launch date, with October 31 seeming likely.

Now arch tipster @evleaks has posted the above picture of a white-backed Nexus 5 on their Twitter account. It reveals the Nexus 5 we’ve all come to know and love through a thousand leaked snaps (including from Google itself), but with a pure white rear panel. The front remains black.

The accompanying text helpfully confirms that this is “In white,” before mentioning a date of “11/1.” Going by the somewhat counter-intuitive American date system, this would point to November 1.

Of course, there’s still the question of whether this means that the Nexus 5 will be unveiled on November 1 or will actually be made available on this date.

Its predecessor, the Google Nexus 4, was announced on October 29 last year, so we strongly expect Google to make some kind of announcement this week.

The Google Nexus 5 is expected to feature a 4.95-inch 1080p LCD display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, a choice of 16 or 32GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel camera, and 4G LTE connectivity.

It will also be the first device to run on Android 4.4 KitKat, the next iteration of Google’s mobile OS.

LG G Flex curved smartphone officially announced

LG has finally announced the LG G Flex, a 6-inch smartphone with a distinctive curved shape.

The G Flex utilises flexible OLED display technology to create an unusual banana-like bend to its 6-inch 720p screen.

LG calls it the “world's first 'real' curved smartphone” in a not-so-subtle dig at its great rival Samsung, which launched the slightly-bent Samsung Galaxy Round earlier in October.

The key difference between the two is that the LG G Flex curves between its top and bottom edges, whereas the Galaxy Round curves up at its left and right edges. However, while Samsung attempted to make a few interesting UI tweaks to take advantage of the Galaxy Round’s curved display, the LG G Flex appears to be pretty standard.

It’s supposed to be ergonomically superior when making calls and more immersive when watching videos, mimicking the curved LCD TVs that both LG and Samsung have produced in recent times. Other than that, there are just a few minor UI additions, such as the “Swing Lockscreen,” which moves the lockscreen according to how the phone has been tilted.

Despite this innovative design, it seems the LG G Flex isn’t made of advanced lightweight components. It weighs a fairly chunky 177g, and measures between 7.9 and 8.7mm thick.

The G Flex is powered by a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, which is pretty much the processor of choice for current high-end Android devices. That’s backed by 2GB of RAM, and is accompanied by a 13-megapixel camera. All of this runs on a 3,500mAh battery.

In fact, arguably the most interesting element of the LG G Flex has nothing to do with its curved display at all. LG has incorporated a self-healing protective film to the back of the phone, which apparently seals up scratches within minutes.

Unfortunately we won’t be able to put any of this to the test any time soon, as there’s been no mention of an international release. Rather, the LG G Flex will hit South Korea next month.

GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition Camcorder Review

What is the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition?

The GoPro HERO3 Black Edition is the successor to the market-leading GoPro HERO3, which we reviewed just three months ago}. It seems rather soon for an update, particularly as the name suggests this is more of a tweak than a totally new version. However, there are still plenty of improvements over the original HERO3 that make this a worthy new version.

GoPro HERO3 Black Edition: Design & Features

The reason why this isn't the HERO4 is that the main core specification is the same. The Black Edition still uses the same 12Mpixel CMOS to offer its headline 4K recording resolution at 15 or 12.5 frames per second, and 4K Cinema (with a 17:9 aspect resolution of 4,096 x 2,160) at 12 frames per second. Then there are 2.7K and 2.7K Cinema options at 30 frames per second, 1440p at up to 48 frames per second, and 1080p at up to 60 frames per second.

A new option, however, is SuperView, which is available when shooting 1080p or 720p footage. This provides more of a wide angle than the regular setting, avoiding fisheye distortion that previously you would need to correct with software. The level of distortion in the middle of the frame is particularly noticeable when compared to footage shot with the HERO3 Black. It achieves this by using a 4:3 portion of the sensor, and then recording this as 16:9 video.

GoPro HERO3 Black Edition

The lens is an area of distinct improvement, with GoPro promising 33 per cent greater sharpness than the HERO3 Black. The lens itself is the same six-element aspherical glass unit with a fixed f/2.8 aperture as the HERO3 Black. But the minimum focus distance has been reduced considerably, and is now around 18cm rather than 1m, although this has meant that the sharpness of distant objects has been reduced slightly.

The still image abilities remain the same as before, with 5, 7 and 12Mpixel options. You can shoot 30 photos in a one-second burst, or a 30-second continuous mode at up to 10 photos a second. There are time lapse options ranging from 0.5 to 60-second intervals. You can capture still images and video simultaneously, too, although only with 1,440p, 1080p and 720p video, and not at the same time as any high-speed modes.

Battery life has been improved by about 30 per cent. Using the HERO3 on its own, without WiFi, allows up to two hours of shooting, although this will drop considerably if you are shooting higher framerate modes. It will also reduce if you turn on Wi-Fi for use with the bundled remote, and still more when using the GoPro App or LCD screen, although now you should get at least an hour of shooting whichever configuration you are using.

GoPro HERO3 Black Edition

The device itself is slightly smaller in its housing than the HERO3, which in turn was 30 per cent smaller and 20 per cent lighter than the HERO2. It weighs the same 74g, however. The housing design has changed subtly, with a reduction in size and weight, and some minor cosmetic alterations to the appearance.

The old HERO3 will fit the new housing, which will mean you can use peripherals for the new camera. But the new housing is only rated to 40m underwater, where the previous case (now reworked as the Dive Housing) is rated to 60m.

The housing buttons are also bigger, and the mechanism for securing the rear door shut has been made simpler. There is now no extra button to push to open the catch securing the door, which in theory makes it less secure, and is probably a major reason why the waterproofing depth has been reduced. But in our testing there was no evidence this would be a problem. The catch is very firm, and a strong impact would be more likely to break the housing than open the catch accidentally.

iPhone 5S stock shortages set to get worse analysts predict

Availability of Apple’s latest flagship phone could be about to get worse, with industry analysts suggesting that iPhone 5S stock shortages are to continue.

With no iPhone 5S pre-orders having been offered ahead of the phone’s official release last month, iPhone 5S stock shortages have plagued the iPhone 5C sibling since launch, with the gold hued iteration of the phone especially in short supply.

Now, despite reports of increased production rates, industry analysts have claimed that that iPhone 5S stock shortages will get worse before they improve, with demand set to far exceed supply in the run up to the lucrative Christmas shopping period and into the new year.

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, iPhone 5S availability has reportedly dropped to less than five per cent of all iPhone models current with retailers, with stronger supplies of the colourful iPhone 5C and aging iPhone 4S not enough to satisfy consumer demands.

With the iPhone 5S accounting for 27 per cent of all iPhone stocks at launch, Munster has claimed that the Apple has failed to meet demand for the new model.

Although not offering a precise date for when he expects iPhone 5S stocks to be able to meet demand, Munster has claimed that Apple will not be able to produce enough handsets until December at the earliest.

With the online Apple store currently offering a “2-3 weeks” delivery time on all iPhone 5S models, Apple has suggested that its next-gen tablets could suffer from similar issues.

With the manufacturer not offering an iPad Air pre-orders ahead of the tablet’s upcoming November 1 release date, the recently unveiled iPad mini 2 with Retina display will not go on sale until “later in November,” with production issues blamed for the delays.

GTA 5 Stimulus Package sees Rockstar delay free money once again

Rockstar Games has been forced to push back the rollout of the promised free GTA 5 money as the GTA 5 Stimulus Package faces a new round of delays.

With the developer having announced it would offer gamers affected by a raft of early GTA Online problems compensation for their issues in the form of free in-game GTA 5 money, Rockstar has now revealed that the apology has been pushed back due to on-going issues.

“We know many of you are anxiously waiting for us to show you the GTA$ Stimulus Package money we announced a couple weeks back. As mentioned in that post, we of course want to ensure that game progress loss issues are sufficiently sorted before distributing the GTA$ to everyone,” an official Rockstar spokesperson has stated.

They added: “We have a few more tweaks and fixes to make in a new title update that will hit sometime next week and then we will distribute the cash.”

With the GTA 5 Stimulus Package having originally been confirmed earlier this month, Rockstar revealed that it would provide GTA Online gamers struck by a number of bugs and glitches, including issues which caused lost game data and characters, $500,000 of in-game GTA 5 money each.

Making the announcement two weeks ago, the company originally stated that the in-game compensation would be rolled out during the week beginning October 14. This was later pushed back to the week of October 21 before having now been pushed back once again.

“Given some of the recent technical issues during these first days of GTA Online, and now that things are starting to look much smoother (touch wood!), we are planning to provide a special stimulus package for all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month,” Rockstar Games originally stated.

They added: “We will be dropping a cool half a million GTA$ in the GTA Online bank accounts of all players this month, starting as early as next week.”

New 4G Google Nexus 4 to launch alongside Nexus 5?

A 4G compatible Google Nexus 4 is reportedly on the cards, with the high speed revision of the Android phone tipped to land alongside the upcoming Google Nexus 5.

With a Google Nexus 5 release date widely expected to be held on either October 30 or 31, a new Bluetooth SIG filing has suggested that a 4G packing Google Nexus 4 update will also be announced alongside its replacement later this month.

Although the Google Nexus 4 was shipped with an LTE chip on board, this connectivity option has remained dormant since the phone’s release last year.

Now, however, an update could be rolled out, giving existing Nexus 4 handsets compatibility with LTE 4G networks and speeds. As well as the software patch which will bring 4G options to existing Nexus 4 owners, it has been suggested that the revised handset could also be sold through the Google Play Store alongside the next-gen Nexus 5 model.

The Google Nexus 4 went out of stock through Google’s retail channels last month, with the phone yet to have been restocked despite the current lack of a confirmed Google Nexus 5 release date.

With both the 4G Google Nexus 4 and Google Nexus 5 now expected to be sold alongside each other, the recent Google Nexus 4 price cut could help make the aging model a more tantalising option to a number of wannabe smartphone owners.

With the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4 having originally cost just £239 and £279 respectively, Google back in August cut the phone’s price even further, with the two models now setting consumers back just £159 and £199.

The Google Nexus 5 is widely expected to be the next powerhouse of the smartphone scene, with a 2.3GHz quad-core processor tipped for inclusion alongside a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display, an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera and Google’s recently confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.
