Tesco Clubcard TV adds BBC Worldwide content

Tesco has signed an agreement with BBC Worldwide to bring new content to its recently launched Tesco Clubcard TV service.

The partnership will mean the free Tesco Clubcard TV streaming service will be infused with BBC Worldwide comedy, drama and, fittingly, cookery programmes, all available on the free service offered to Tesco Clubcard holders.

Classic comedies like Goodness Gracious Me and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps will now be offered on the service, as well as dramas such as Carrie’s War and children’s movies like The Secret Garden.

“With this deal we’re adding a raft of new TV titles to our expanding catalogue, providing access to even more great digital entertainment in a way that’s easy and accessible for customers,” said Scott Deutrom, MD at Clubcard TV.

The Clubcard TV service was developed by the team behind Blinkbox, Tesco’s other TV and movie streaming site, and already offers content from Endemol, Warner Bros and Aardman alongside the new BBC Worldwide content.

“We’re thrilled to have concluded such an extensive deal with Clubcard TV which will offer their customers a rich range of fantastic British content,” added BBC Worldwide’s Head of UK, Ireland and Pan European Television Sales Lisa Rousseau.

Tesco Clubcard holders, which currently number around 16 million, can enjoy free online streaming of movies and TV programmes using the Clubcard TV service which launched last month. The service is supported by targeted ad breaks based on the information contained within a user’s Tesco Clubcard account.

Offered without monthly subscriptions or pay-per-view charges, all users have to do to gain access is enter their Clubcard number and personal details to be able to enjoy the online content. Anyone without a Tesco Clubcard can also apply for one for free, thus allowing them access to the service.

Currently only available via a desktop browser, Tesco already has plans to extent the Clubcard TV service to other platforms such as tablets and Smart TVs.
